The History of Basketball

Basketball, the world spread game, was found in American school gymnasium by a creative PE teacher. New active entertainment was so absorbing that soon expanded all over the country and beyond its borders. Both men and women play it for career and entertainment all over the world today.

The Roots of Basketball

James Naismith was a Canadian PE teacher, who lived in Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1891, he invented an indoor activity for his students. It is interesting that at the beginning basketball team counted 9 people and was played according to 13 rules. They had to throw a leather ball through the fruit baskets, which hung at the balconies. As the baskets had a bottom a person called janitor was needed to take out the ball each time anyone scored, thus later it was decided to cut the bottom off. Today, people associate basketball with metal hoops and nets, but they appeared only in 1906. The first public game of basketball was played in1892.

The Foundation of the National Basketball Association (NBA)

Soon, the game attracted the attention of other schools and cities and spread all over America. During World War 1, American soldiers spread the game around the world and it gained national and international status. The first National Basketball League was founded in 1898. Unfortunately, the League was disbanded after 6 years of its existence. In 1949, the second attempt of creating a national league was realized and the National Basketball Association was established. The Chicago Bulls, the Boston Celtics, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the New York Knicks are the most famous teams of the NBA. Nowadays, it is also known as the best world basketball professional league. The best basketball players all over the world aim to play in it, as except being prestigious, popular, and competitive, it supplies its members with good earnings.


Besides men, many women wanted to participate in basketball competitions and the sister of the NBA was founded in 1996. It is the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).However, neither NBA, nor WNBA is in authority on a global level. It is the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), which defines the rules for world basketball and relocates the players across the countries. The federation organizes men and women world cup competitions in different locations every 4 years. The FIBA consists of 205 federations divided into 6 zones: Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are recognized all over the world as the world best basketball players ever.
