The symptoms of PTSD may be set into three main groups, i.e. re-experiencing a traumatic event, avoiding the recollections of a trauma, and increased anxiety and emotional arousal. The risk of developing PTSD depends on the possible combination of biological predisposition and environmental aspects of human perception. PTSD assessment presupposes taking into consideration the issues that evaluate the level of the severity of symptoms and their adjustment on the social niveau.

Two ways of effective PTSD treatment are medication and therapy. They can be either combined for better results or used separately. Various researches have proved that the following treatment methods are effective and working: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) that has in turn such two main types as Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT); and Medications called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs); and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

A person with PTSD symptoms will affect all the members of the family. The altered situation can provoke a lot of stress and various difficulties for the family. Nevertheless, family members have to be patient and to encourage the trauma survivor, if it is possible, to have positive attitude towards life.
