Free «Unsuitable Language» UK Essay Paper
Language that we use might sometimes play an important role in our life. Lets say, if one is trying to get a job, the way he presents himself during the meeting is a turning point in the whole procedure. During our lifetime, we find ourselves in the situations, when couple words may help to overcome some hardships or on the other hand may spoil the moment. The very simple example of the situation when we need to be eloquent is exam. I would rather doubt that student whose language is poor is able to make an impression on the professor no matter how hard he tries or how good he knows the subject. We all know, that the person whose language is brilliant, is able to find the way out of seemingly hopeless situation. Of course, there are obstacles, which may ruin our conversation out of the blue - inappropriate words.
Inappropriate language or as it is called “unsuitable” language has different forms. First of all, inappropriate language may be something, that is said not at a right time or place, its not specifically cursing or swearing. For instance, one may say something funny at the funeral, or vise versa, may talk about gross occasions at the dinner.
The first thing though which comes to mind if talking about inappropriate language is curse. According to the most definitions given in the dictionaries, curse means an appeal or prayer for evil or misfortune to befall someone or something; or, it is defined as a profane word or phrase, in other words a swearword. It is also defined as something evil thus bad and immoral.
The definition of vulgarity is something such as an act or expression that offends good taste or propriety. Another definition is the quality of lacking taste and refinement.
Swearing is another type of “unsuitable” language, which can easily became a habit and is of course a bad habit. If one has started swearing it is very hard to stop. Swearing is usually adopted in the company or by the parental example. That is why parents have to be careful while talking to each other, because children have a tendency to repeat what they hear. If you think the only cool way to reply to a friend, parent, teacher or co-worker is with a curse, then you have a problem. One has to realize, that in case of using swear word somewhere in the office or at school may cause very sad and fatal consequences: you may lose a job or be expelled. In this case nobody cares for your excuses even if you really did not mean, what you have just uttered: if the word is said, there is no way to take it back, and what is even more sad, you probably ruin your reputation in the eyes of the audience once and forever. That is why there has to be distinct line between language you use in the pub and the way you talk to your professor. It is really not easy to balance between formal and colloquial style, especially if you are used to the second one.
